A Winter’s Tale

How to make your home Christmassy…

Tis the season for dressing up our homes. We asked a few of our Alternative friends for their festive interior tips and how they plan to spread some holiday cheer indoors.

Travel, fashion, beauty and lifestyle editor Amelia Liana takes us into her home.

“If you add warm lights to anything it instantly feels more festive and adds a cosy feel to the room!’”

Margo’s family magic

“We are never too precious at Christmas. This year we let the kids decorate in their style so there is Tinsel up the stairs, paperchains, baubles on the ceiling and handmade decorations in the tree.

Christmas is a time for exuberance and maximalism. We all go a bit OTT in our house, and everyone enjoys the extra sparkle and colour. The kids just love it.”

Kemi’s themed tips

Kemi at home

“I find the most fun way to dress a home for Christmas is to have an inspiring theme. This really helps when you get overwhelmed in shops or even in your cupboards by all the different baubles and decorations you have collected over the years. This year we have an African Narnia theme. In previous years it has been Eco-Christmas, Tiffany Blue, Black and Gold and Tropical.

For me Christmas is about the Christmas angel decorations, and I am always on the hunt for Christmas angels that represent me and my daughters with afro hair and brown skin. Adding them to our tree always add a beautiful energy and a memory of what Christmas is really about.

Alternative’s top ten decorating tips

Alternative’s Quirky Tartan Red Red Rose

Our chunky wool carpets make the best Christmas hug for homes and are a treat for bare feet. Margo Selby’s Quirky Fair Isle is like your snuggliest wool jumper but on your floors and Quirky Tartan captures the spirit of the season. Tartan’s association with Christmas comes from the Scottish folk who wore their plaids at the Yuletide festivities during the cold winter months.

Our top ten festive interior tips

  • Stairway to heaven with carpet runners

  • Drape with a verdant garland and finish with a bow

  • Decorate your tree with more than just baubles

  • Paper chains and tinsel return this Yuletide

  • Expand the green and red repertoire

  • Have something handmade for a meaningful touch

  • Spread cosiness with textiles and textures

  • Roll out deep pile carpets and cosy rugs

  • Add some greenery and natural elements

  • What about a flower and foliage festooned mantel?

Each year Elf brightens up our screens. This classic film brings Christmas cheer and some of the most heart-warming quotes. We too think “There’s room for everyone on the Nice List” and that everyone should decorate their rooms with comfort and joy. Oh, and that super-sized Christmas Tree.
