Tell us about your home and who you share it with.

I live in a beautiful coastal village just outside Edinburgh with my family and two young children Willow and Kit. 

Could you tell us a bit about your background and how your love for interiors began.

Before having children I worked in public relations, but I’ve always held a huge passion for home interiors, photography and design. I haven’t studied interior design; I simply follow my instincts when it comes to choices. 

How did you discover Alternative?

I’ve always loved the look of sisal and the character it instantly brings to a room. I have used Alternative Flooring Sisal in all my previous homes having seen it many years ago and love the style and quality. 

How did you go about choosing the flooring in your home?

Moving into a much more modern home than our previous properties, I wanted to inject as much character as possible, layering lots of textures to create a cosy depth and charm. I love the weave of this particular sisal and the fact that it is available in a 5m width helping to create a truly seamless finish.

Why did you choose Sisal and in particular the new chunky Sisal Kayal?

I specifically chose the new chunky Sisal Kayal for the beautiful texture and warmth it instantly adds to the room. The large weave not only looks stunning to the eye, but the quality is exceptional. The pile is thick and like walking on a cloud. It oozes luxurious comfort which is just what I look for when selecting the key elements of any room.

Tell us about your interior style?

I’m completely obsessed with the charm and character of old properties, the type of character you don’t have to create, just enhance. However, for ease of living a modern home has presented a new challenge of creating an interesting home on essentially a blank box. I would say my style is quite maximalist! I love colour and pattern and bringing the feeling of joy to a room. 

Where do you draw inspiration for your interiors?

It usually starts with a fabric I’m drawn to. Picking out colours and developing the ideas from there. There’s no method, it usually unfolds quite naturally from pulling together things I really love and treasure. 

Do you have any advice for those embarking on a decorating project?

Be bold. Enjoy colour. Mix patterns. Embrace joy! 

Which room in your house is your favourite?

Day to day we live between our open plan kitchen diner which has direct access to our south facing garden and the playroom. I also love the cosiness and quintessential British charm of the children’s playroom which is covered in a cheerful and nostalgic block printed strawberry wallpaper by Molly Mahon.
