What is a seagrass rug?

Seagrass rugs are made from natural seagrass fibres which are sustainable and beautiful. They work well in most indoor domestic spaces such as the bedroom, dining room or lounge. Our seagrass rugs start their journey in the coastal meadows of China and Vietnam. During the growing cycle the crop is flooded by seawater and harvested by hand. The colours vary in tones between yellow and green, bringing a natural beauty to the weave. Once harvested and dried, the seagrass is spun into cords which are used to create our beautiful rug options.

Can seagrass rugs get wet?

As a plant fibre seagrass is naturally absorbent, which means it is particularly susceptible to mould and mildew, which means that damp spaces with fluctuating temperatures are not a great space to have seagrass. We would also be cautious about spillages, even water can leave a mark. We recommend that when any kind of spill occurs, speed is of the essence and it should be blotted as soon as possible and quickly treated with our WoolSafe approved Natural Flooring Care Kit.

Design your own made to measure seagrass rug

Our Make Me A Rug tool let's you design your own made to measure seagrass rug. So if you’re wanting a large, or even extra large rug, our custom made seagrass rugs are completely bespoke; whatever your style or space, we’ve got you covered. .

Do seagrass rugs shed?

One of the amazing benefits about seagrass rugs is that there is very little, to no, shedding of its natural fibres. If you’re looking for a sustainable rug option with beautiful natural hues, then we would definitely recommend a seagrass rug. With the proper care, they can last a long time.

Are seagrass rugs soft?

Jute would be considered the softest of our natural plant fibres, however unlike jute, seagrass rugs would not attract dust. Seagrass is less coarse than a sisal or coir fibre so its a great 'middle road' option. Order a sample online to see and feel the texture to see if a seagrass rug is the perfect option for your space.

How to clean a seagrass rug

Being a natural plant fibre, and inherently absorbant, seagrass rugs don’t like to get wet, but we want to empower you in keeping your rug clean. When ordering our seagrass rugs,  you can choose to have Intec, our environmentally friendly stain inhibitor treatment added, which will help to reduce the impact of liquid spillages, whilst prolonging your floor covering. If a spillage occurs on your seagrass rug, speed is of the essence. Blot, do not rub, and treat with our WoolSafe approved Natural Flooring Care Kit which contains tried and tested products suitable for natural and delicate fibres. It will be kind to your rug and kind to the planet. If you have a query or need details for a professional cleaner, speak to an expert at WoolSafe now.
